Directs all phases of Mill 3 sawmill and log yard operations.  Through effective leadership and organization, meets or exceeds annual goals in the areas of safety, product mix opportunity, productivity, recovery, quality and cost control.  Also implements human resource initiatives and maintains mill environmental compliance.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

   Assures effective overall direction and operation of the Mill 3 sawmill, log yard, and associated area to meet or exceed annual safety goals, daily sawmill production and recovery targets, and maximum utilization of assigned assets and resources. 

   Assures a safe operating environment implementing the annual safety plan (including fire protection and security) utilizing significant employee involvement.

   Assures that mill equipment optimization systems are functioning as expected and assures that lumber is manufactured within the established guidelines and standards.  Evaluates and immediately corrects negative variances.

   Contributes to the annual operating plan and budget for the sawmill production, maintenance, filing, and log yard operations. Continually monitors and assesses performance against plan goals and takes action to overcome variances and to assure ongoing mill enhancements and operations improvement.

   Within the context of the division capital plan, works with the project manager to select equipment and commission approved capital projects. Maintains ongoing awareness and assessment of new technology and more efficient process systems through vendor contacts, competitor mill visits, trade show participation and industry clinics.

   Monitors delivered log quality and provides feedback regarding specification variances. 

   Monitors Mill 3 log inventory levels at the Mill 3 and Dayton log yards, and in Oakland Bay. Provides direction to log procurement, railroad, and log yard personnel to ensure that log inventory is efficiently managed.

   Participates in sales production coordination meetings to provide knowledge, insight and recommendations regarding mill performance and alternatives to maximize margin.

   Implements and maintains approved staffing levels.  Participates in the hiring of new employees adhering to standards for qualifications based on skills, experience and motivation.  

   Implements and monitors the effectiveness of employee training and skill development plans to assure a safe, productive and quality oriented workforce.

   Assure a positive labor relations atmosphere by requiring firm and consistent application of labor agreement and maintenance of open and honest communication with union representatives and employees.

   Assure a work environment which respects the rights of employees.  Assure that personnel activity is conducted in a non-discriminatory manner in keeping with the Simpson policy, and that employee concerns and complaints are acted upon promptly and confidentially.

   Assure that all environmental regulations and policies are implemented effectively.

Required Skills:   Qualifications:  
   5 – 10 years of progressive management experience and responsibility in the lumber manufacturing industry with emphasis on sawmills, maintenance and log yards

   Thoroughly understand computerized optimization and scanning equipment

   Direct involvement in major capital projects including equipment selection and project management

   Utilization of PC (Word and Excel)
